Description
The book starts with a short introduction to the nineteenth century master detective, and theoretical historian, Edmund Robert Satz. E.R.Satz as he preferred being called compiled the case notes within Journal 97. He believed that he assembled positive proof that Dracula was not who or what he was thought to be.
The author rewrites these notes in the form of a story which begins in Wallachia, the birthplace of the vampire legends in the year 1380. A young aristocrat named Vladoff is the only one of his family to survive a brutal vampire attack. He is taken prisoner and forced to travel south on a killing spree that lasts almost a year.
Vladoff manages to separate himself from the group but then must learn how to survive for the first time on his own. Eventually he meets Yuri a young man who is running away from the tyrant that controls Lastari, the town where he lived.
This unlikely pair are thrown together by their individual circumstances and create a new and secret life for themselves. Just when everything seems perfect, they are suddenly threatened and must flee in order to survive. Their journey helps them find their rightful place in the world and E.R.Satz's discovery is revealed.
E.R.Satz's odd philosophy creates an ever-changing undercurrent of subtle humor. At times it is hard to determine whether his notes are fact, fiction, or the ramblings of a diluted mind.
